The first phase is what most people do, and that's giving to the church or charity while you're alive. The Church and charities receive immediate benefit from our gifts, and the donations are usually tax deductible. The gift can be monthly, one time, or during fund raising events like the Parish Auction. Your generosity is truly a blessing and sincerely appreciated. Unfortunately, the benefits the Church receives immediately stop upon your death. Your death can greatly impact the Church's mission since it still has ongoing financial needs. Giving is our response to God’s blessings during our life and can be part of our inheritance plan after our life on earth.
The second phase of planned giving is called legacy giving, which is making a planned gift while you are alive and/or after your death. Remembering our parish, school, or ministry will continue to help build up the Body of Christ and make an impact for future generations of Catholics.
There are straight forward ways of making a legacy gift without calling an attorney. Simply by changing a beneficiary on a checking account, CD, or life insurance policy to a full or partial beneficiary can be a quick, easy, and an inexpensive way to give to charity after your death.
Your Will and/or Estate Plan should be reviewed periodically. Designating our parish or other charities can reduce inheritance and income taxes your dependents may have to pay. Also making the gift non-restrictive for its use helps the parish have flexibility in using your gift in the best manner that assists the parish in the future.
